On the 27th, Qinghai Electric Power Company under the State Grid Corporation of China announced that by June 30, the installed capacity of new energy in Qinghai Province had reached 8.743 million kilowatts, accounting for 35.42% of the province’s total installed power capacity.
Qinghai is endowed with abundant hydropower resources and unique solar energy potential. The province boasts 23.4 million kilowatts of exploitable hydropower, 1 billion kilowatts of solar energy, and 75 million kilowatts of wind energy. These resources make Qinghai a crucial regional energy hub in China.
Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," Qinghai has been leveraging its natural advantages to foster the growth of its clean energy sector as part of its economic transformation strategy. A series of new energy plans and supportive policies have been implemented, leading to the rapid expansion of the new energy industry.
To support this development, Qinghai has completed several key grid infrastructure projects, including the Qinghai-Tibet power grid interconnection, the second Xining-Northwest Main Grid tunnel, and the 750-kilovolt Sun-Yueshan to Gonghe transmission project. Additionally, new energy collection and delivery initiatives like those in Golmudan, Baishu, and Huiming have been brought online.
The provincial electric power company emphasized that Qinghai’s photovoltaic grid connection primarily occurs in large-scale, centralized installations, particularly in Haixi and Hainan Prefectures. To address the challenges of integrating large-scale new energy into the grid, the company is focusing on researching complementary clean energy optimization and multi-energy systems, along with advanced UHV technologies. These efforts aim to ensure the sustainable and efficient development of the new energy sector.
Furthermore, to support the creation of a Qinghai Clean Energy Demonstration Province and establish two 10-million-ton energy bases in Haixi and Hainan, the State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company is accelerating research into smart microgrid technology in Yunjiakou and photovoltaic power generation at Gonghe. They are also developing clean energy data centers and enhancing flexible control systems, short-term power forecasting, and other critical infrastructure. The construction of the 750 kV Hercynian-Tara transmission project is underway, which will further strengthen the province’s grid architecture.
These initiatives reflect Qinghai's commitment to becoming a national leader in renewable energy while balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability.
