Murata has always been at the forefront of innovation, and in 2012, it expanded its MEMS sensor portfolio by acquiring VTI, a leading Finnish MEMS company. In the automotive electronics industry, this expansion is primarily focused on "active safety," aiming to prevent accidents before they occur during driving.
Murata’s MEMS sensors are widely used in various automotive systems, including Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electric Control Suspension (ECS), Electric Parking Brake (EPB), Hill Start Assist (HAS), Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), engine vibration control, vehicle tilt measurement, in-vehicle heart rate monitoring, and more. Unlike traditional "passive safety" features like airbags, Murata's sensors use their high sensitivity and reliability to detect potential issues early, reducing the risk of accidents.
Cui Wei, a senior engineer from Murata (China) Investment Co., Ltd., highlights the role of accelerometers, gyro sensors for rollover prevention, pressure sensors, and tire pressure monitoring sensors in active safety systems. These sensors are AEC-Q100 compliant, offering high accuracy, stability, and reliability—especially in critical systems like ESC. Recently, Murata introduced the SCC3300, a new three-axis automotive-grade accelerometer that significantly improves upon its predecessor, the SCC3100. The SCC3300 offers better zero offset stability, lower noise, improved linearity, enhanced vibration and impact resistance, ensuring superior performance in harsh environments.
Beyond traditional applications, Murata is also investing heavily in emerging technologies such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Its MEMS sensors play a key role in ADAS functions like forward collision alerts, blind spot detection, lane departure warnings, and automatic parking. As autonomous driving evolves, sensor technology becomes even more crucial for safe and reliable operations.
To support self-driving vehicles, advanced technologies like LiDAR, 24GHz and 77GHz radar, vision cameras, and ultrasonic sensors will be integrated. This future of driverless cars will rely on multi-sensor fusion, with MEMS sensors playing an essential role. For instance, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) help determine the vehicle's attitude and aid in high-precision positioning. When GPS signals are lost or blocked, such as in tunnels or urban canyons, MEMS-based IMUs provide critical redundant data for the vehicle's decision-making system.
Looking ahead, Murata remains committed to pushing the boundaries of MEMS technology. It continues to develop high-precision, reliable products tailored for automotive electronics, focusing on safety, connectivity, and proactive prevention. By doing so, Murata aims to make driving safer, smarter, and more comfortable for everyone.
