Mitsubishi PLCs allow users to control the operation and stop functions through the RUN/STOP switch located on the PLC panel. However, some customers prefer not to use a small DIP switch for control. Instead, they opt for more user-friendly switches that are easier to operate. Mitsubishi's approach is practical and adaptable for such scenarios.

The FX series of Mitsubishi PLCs supports external signals to start and stop the programmable controller. To utilize this feature, specific parameters must be set in the PLC programming software, and a corresponding program needs to be written.

To implement this functionality, follow these steps:

  1. Define an external input signal that triggers the PLC to run within the PLC programming software. This setting is usually found under the PLC parameters section. The external signal can be assigned to any input point from X0 to X17 (depending on the main unit's capabilities).
  2. Use another input signal, such as X1, as the stop command. This signal should not be used for starting the PLC.
  3. Write the following program in the PLC:
LD M8000
OUT M8035
OUT M8036
LD X001
OUT M8037

This program allows the PLC to start when the designated input (X001) is activated and to stop when the stop signal (X1) is triggered. The forced operation and stop commands are defined in the PLC programming manual as follows:

  • M8035: Forced Operation Mode
  • M8036: Forced Run Command
  • M8037: Forced Stop Command

By using these commands, you can effectively control the PLC's operation remotely or through external inputs, offering greater flexibility in industrial automation setups.
