On December 21st, the fifth generation of mobile communication technology, known as 5G, reached a major milestone as its first official release was frozen and published in Lisbon. This event marks an important step forward in the global standardization of 5G. According to recent reports, the first version of the international 5G standard is expected to be released in June next year, paving the way for the rapid expansion of 5G networks worldwide.

The first version of the 5G standard will be released in June next year.

The official freeze of the 5G NR (New Radio) specification occurred during the RAN 78th Plenary Session in Lisbon at 18:41 local time on December 21st (02:41 Beijing Time). This first release represents the foundational set of features for 5G's air interface technology, primarily supporting dual connectivity in non-standalone (NSA) deployments based on LTE. The release of this version marks another significant achievement in the 5G standardization process. China Mobile played a key role in this effort, serving as the sole reporter and editor-in-chief of the agreement, and leading the research on 5G air interface scenarios and requirements, contributing the technical document 3GPP TR 38.913.

The first edition of the 5G standard was divided into two main approaches: non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA). NSA acts as a transitional solution, aiming to enhance hotspot bandwidth by relying on existing 4G base stations and core networks. In contrast, SA allows full realization of 5G's new capabilities, making it the industry’s preferred long-term solution for 5G deployment.

According to the 3GPP schedule, the functional part of the 5G standalone (SA) standard is expected to be finalized in June 2018, with the full standard being completed by the third quarter of that year. This will officially confirm the first global 5G standard.

A report from Qualcomm predicts that 5G will generate $12.3 trillion in global economic output by 2035. It is also expected that between 2020 and 2035, 5G's contribution to global GDP growth will be comparable to the entire economic output of India.

Wen Ke, Director of the Information and Communication Development Department, stated that by the end of this year, the country will complete part of the 5G two-stage network testing. With the release of the first international 5G standard in June next year, domestic products are expected to be launched around the same time or close to commercial readiness, laying a solid foundation for the swift development of 5G technology.
