On the evening of August 30th, Dolby Laboratories announced that they would soon release a Dolby Atmos solution specifically tailored for smart TVs powered by Mstar Semiconductor. This new solution will enable smart TVs to deliver true Dolby Atmos sound experiences in the future without relying on external decoding devices.

It’s worth noting that the joint initiative between Dolby and Mstar is based on the latest version of the MS12 V2 decoder, which incorporates Dolby Multistream Decoder technology. With this solution, manufacturers can leverage existing TV 2.0 or 2.1 speaker setups to create a three-dimensional immersive audio experience without needing traditional multi-channel sound systems.
Moreover, the Dolby Multistream Decoder MS12 simplifies the integration of multiple audio technologies while maintaining consistent volume levels across different programs and content sources. It supports the AC4 specification and offers post-production flexibility, making it compatible with future standards such as ATSC 3.0 and beyond.
Currently, major streaming platforms like Netflix, Vudu, and iQiyi are starting to experiment with offering Dolby Atmos sound services. Interestingly, there are only about 50 theaters equipped with Dolby Atmos technology in North America and Guangzhou as of 2016 data.
