On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art event were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People’s Government of Yixiu District. Organized by Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd., the VR Industry Summit Forum took place, with VR Network as a specially invited media outlet covering the event.
The forum focused on the integration of traditional Chinese opera performance arts with modern technology, particularly virtual reality (VR). Discussions explored how interactive technologies could drive creative transformation and innovative development in Chinese opera, expanding the application scope of modern science and technology and opening up new pathways for the industry.
Dr. Zhao Jingfa, an adviser to the Chinese Traditional Opera Performance Society and former director of the Beijing-Kunming Chamber of the CPPCC National Committee, delivered a keynote speech. He emphasized that the 19th National Party Congress marked a new era for traditional opera, where humanistic creativity plays a central role in its evolution. He highlighted the importance of inner emotion shaping performance and the actor's image, which is essential for establishing a compelling stage presence.
He also discussed the significance of the eyes in opera performance, referencing the saying “the art of one is in the face, and the art in one face is in the eye.†Dr. Zhao noted that while historical actors practiced intense focus, such as Mei Hao staring at the incense until it burned out, modern performers no longer follow this method. He urged the preservation of these traditional techniques for future generations.
He pointed out the diversity of Chinese opera, using examples like Tang Minghuang in both Kunqu and Peking Opera. During Mei Lanfang’s 1930–1935 tour to the U.S. and the Soviet Union, audiences were captivated by his gestures, with many praising his hand movements. Mei developed over 53 unique finger gestures, showcasing the richness of opera performance.
Dr. Zhao also emphasized the importance of proper use of props and costumes, noting that even minor errors can significantly impact a performance. He stressed the need to preserve the charm and traditional methods of opera, ensuring they are not lost over time.
Talent development was another key topic. He cited the 19th National Congress report, which called for cultivating more creative talents and artistic masters. He argued that the most valuable aspect of opera is not just technique but the enduring artistic thoughts and spiritual values passed down through generations.
Regarding the integration of VR and opera, Dr. Zhao described VR as a tool that enhances imagination and provides an immersive experience. He shared past experiences of using multimedia, 3D animation, and surround sound to revitalize Peking Opera and make it more accessible to younger audiences. He believed that combining drama with VR could offer new opportunities and inspire artists in the modern era.
The summit brought together leaders from the Ministry of Culture, Anqing City, Yixiu District, and Tsinghua University. Notable attendees included Wang Xuan, President of Digital World; He Yimin, CEO of Digital World; Liu Yong, CEO of VR Virtual Reality; Zuo Houchao, Deputy Director of the New Media Department of China Intercontinental Communication Center; and other industry leaders. Over 50 theater experts participated, discussing the future of "drama + VR." Additionally, 14 opera masters performed a special show in Anqing, reminding everyone of their original passion and commitment to the people.
