Texas Instruments' new device for 24V stepper motors complements its line of high performance Stepper Motor drives. Two of these devices also offer TI's patented AutoTune? Technology that eliminates the need for stepper motor tuning and provides two integrated current sensing for applications such as 3D printers, robotics, factory automation equipment, and money counters.

AutoTune technology on the DRV8880 and DRV8881 devices eliminates time-consuming and repetitive manual tuning, allowing design time to be significantly reduced. This on-chip intelligence dynamically monitors motor performance over the life of the motor and adjusts the attenuation settings appropriately. This function develops a quiet and efficient motor even in the case of motor properties, supply voltage, load and torque changes.

Some motor systems do not require the stability and long life of AutoTune technology, in which case designers can take advantage of the new DRV8885 bipolar stepper motor driver with integrated current sensing. TI has incorporated a unique technology into this device. This technology eliminates the need for two external sense resistors to accurately regulate the current entering the motor, which saves up to 20% board space and simplifies routing traces compared to competing devices.

Tools and support

Designers can accelerate the evaluation and design of new stepper motor drivers using the DRV8880EVM, DRV8881EEVM (for phase/enable interfaces), DRV8881PEVM (for PWM interfaces), and the DRV8885EVM Evaluation Module (EVM). Each EVM features an onboard MSP430TM microcontroller that provides designers with a cost-effective platform that accelerates development and reduces time-to-market. Each EVM can be purchased at TI stores and authorized distributors.
