With the rapid development of society, the internet's capacity has grown significantly, and the speed of network connections is continuously increasing. It is reported that 200G and 400G Ethernet will soon become a reality, meeting the growing demand for reliable and high-speed connectivity across various industries and applications. The Ethernet Alliance is well-prepared to support this evolution.
On December 6, 2017, the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group officially approved the new IEEE 802.3bs standard, which defines both 200G Ethernet (200GbE) and 400G Ethernet (400GbE). This includes specifications for media access control parameters and physical layer requirements, as well as management features.
The Ethernet Alliance announced that it is now ready to implement the newly approved 200/400 GbE standard in commercial applications. This technology is designed to support a wide range of interconnect solutions, offering ultra-high bandwidth that perfectly suits the needs of cloud data centers, internet switching, hosted services, and service provider networks—applications that require massive data throughput while reducing port costs.
John D’Ambrosia, Senior Principal Engineer at Huawei and Chair of the IEEE P802.3bs Task Force, emphasized that the 802.3bs standard marks a key transformation in next-generation mobile networks. The arrival of 200/400GbE is timely, addressing the need for fast and reliable connectivity across different sectors. He also noted that the real work of testing and ensuring multi-vendor compatibility has just begun, and the Ethernet Alliance is fully prepared for this challenge.
In March 2017, the Ethernet Alliance successfully demonstrated 400GbE, showcasing its readiness for the future of high-speed networking.
