The next generation of Sharp processors come out in April: 12nm process, higher frequency, with X470 motherboard

The second-generation Ryzen processor is based on the previously announced Zen+ architecture, which is an optimized version of the original Zen core. The 12nm process is actually an enhanced version of GlobalFoundries' 14nm FinFET technology. This makes the second-gen Ryzen a significant upgrade over its predecessor.

While AMD hasn’t provided exact performance figures, one thing is clear: the previous conservative frequency behavior—especially for boost clocks—will change. AMD emphasized that the second-gen Ryzen features higher base and boost frequencies, along with the improved Precision Boost 2 technology, allowing it to sustain higher speeds for longer periods, thus boosting overall performance.

The second-generation Ryzen is expected to hit the market in April, just one year after the first-gen Ryzen was launched. This rapid development cycle is faster than many had anticipated, showing AMD’s commitment to continuous improvement and product refreshes within a short time frame.

With the release of the Ryzen APU, AMD's AM4 platform layout remains consistent across both desktop and mobile versions. Both generations of Ryzen processors will continue to use the AM4 socket, ensuring compatibility with existing motherboards. In theory, users can simply update their BIOS to support the next-gen Ryzen processor without needing a new motherboard.

Of course, AMD won’t stop there. The X470 chipset will be released alongside the second-gen Ryzen, offering better performance and lower power consumption. It will also launch in April, ensuring a smooth transition for users upgrading their systems.
