The US Department of Energy has initiated standards development and information gathering procedures to consider whether the energy-saving standards for energy-saving lamp ballasts and revised energy-saving requirements are applicable to other types of energy-saving lamp ballasts.
Energy-saving lamp ballasts currently under the control of US energy policy and energy conservation regulations include:
1. Control one and two ballasts of 4 ft T12 medium double needle fluorescent lamps (F40T12 and F34T12) rated at 40W and 34W.

2. Control two ballasts of 8 foot T12 single-needle thin tube fluorescent lamps (F96T12 and F96T12/ES) rated at 75W and 60W.

3. Control two ballasts of 8 ft T12 concealed double-height high output fluorescent lamps (F96T12 and F96T12/ES) rated at 110W and 95W, rated input voltage of 120 volts or 277 volts, input current frequency of 60 Hz .
Ballasts currently not regulated by regulations include:
1. Ballast for dimming to 50% of its maximum output or below its maximum output.
2. Ballasts for two F96T12HO lamps at ambient temperature of -20 ° C or below -20 ° F and ballasts used in outdoor signs, or when the ambient temperature is 20 ° C or less than 20 ° F Ballasts for two F96T12/ES lamps and ballasts for use in outdoor signs.
3. A ballast with a power factor of less than 0.90, designated for use in residential building equipment installations and labeled.
4. Ballast replacements that meet certain criteria.
The US Department of Energy has now developed a framework document explaining the problems and analytical reports and procedures that can be expected when studying the revised standards for energy-saving lamp ballasts.
