In an interview with the China Economic Times, Huang Xiaojun, founder and CEO of Tune Technology, described Philips Hue as the evolution of intelligent lighting 1.5, while the arrival of Tune Technology marks the dawn of intelligent lighting 2.0. He compared this shift to the transition from wired to wireless telephones, emphasizing that the new era offers a complete experience and a mature ecosystem. According to Huang, intelligent lighting 2.0 is not just a product upgrade but also a smart, user-friendly solution that aligns with people’s daily habits. According to public data, by 2020, smart lighting is expected to account for 20% of the global lighting market, with a projected value exceeding $100 billion. This sector is rapidly emerging as a new "blue ocean" in the future market. Huang highlighted that the LED era has opened up massive growth opportunities in intelligent lighting, driven by energy efficiency, digital integration, and enhanced consumer experiences. The “China Intelligent Lighting Industry Analysis Report” from Forward-looking Industry Research Institute indicates that the domestic smart lighting market reached approximately RMB 12.4 billion in 2016, showing a year-on-year growth of 23%. Smart LEDs are set to replace traditional lighting, making them essential for the future. Huang founded Tune Technology in 2014, focusing on intelligent lighting and central control systems. Before starting the company, he conducted extensive market research and recognized the potential of LED digital applications. He believes the Internet of Things (IoT) holds great promise, and intelligent lighting has significant market potential due to favorable policies and the slow adoption of smart solutions by industry giants. Currently, the Chinese lighting market, valued at over 200 billion yuan annually, lacks a dominant brand, creating opportunities for startups. While international lighting companies have made progress in digital applications and smart city lighting, they haven't fully tapped into the home market. Additionally, most smart lighting products today are standalone and lack comprehensive system solutions. Huang points out that smart lighting hasn’t gained widespread popularity yet due to low market awareness and inconvenient control methods. Many products are basic, unadjustable, and expensive. His goal with Tune Technology is to address these pain points by offering a system-level intelligent lighting solution that is easy to use and cost-effective. Today, the company's main focus is on smart home lighting, with plans to expand to other areas. Huang is optimistic about the future of smart homes, believing that success depends on delivering real value and simplifying users' lives. He sees smart lighting as a key entry point for smart homes, given its widespread presence and high usage frequency. Despite current limitations, smart home lighting is gradually entering households. Tune Technology is collaborating with major real estate developers like Evergrande and Zhongliang to boost brand visibility and create opportunities for market exposure. Huang emphasizes that smart lighting isn’t just about the lights themselves, but more importantly, the intelligent control platform. Most existing products are still at an entry level, and a true smart lighting solution requires both hardware and software integration, supporting multiple devices and centralized control across entire spaces. Tune Technology combines hardware and software, offering products such as smart switches, smart bulbs, and mobile apps. Their Zigbee + WiFi protocol allows dynamic networking and control of up to 2,000 lamps simultaneously. The company aims to redefine human-light interaction through the concept of “simple intelligence.” Looking ahead, Huang’s vision is to dominate the home lighting market in China, aiming for the top spot and planning to go public in 2019. He believes that building a strong brand in the traditionally conservative lighting industry requires innovation, long-term commitment, and a balance between affordability and quality. While international players like Philips, GE, and Osram have entered the smart lighting space, many domestic brands still lag behind in terms of brand awareness and strategy. Huang believes that the key for Chinese companies is to develop low-cost, durable products that meet consumer needs. Currently, Tune Technology offers 14 types of light sources, including downlights, spotlights, and soft light strips, along with physical switches. Unlike Philips, which focuses mainly on bulbs and ceiling lamps, Tune Technology provides a broader range of products with integrated control modules, offering a complete smart lighting system.
