This powerful combination, for the smartphone and tablet market, provides designers with a digital audio subsystem that eliminates the distortion caused by routing analog signals over longer distances. The device integrates an innovative audio mixing technology that easily handles multiple audio routing and parallel use cases, efficiently utilizing semiconductor space in a compact package. The WM8996 incorporates Wolfson's superior audio playback quality technology with ultra-low power consumption to deliver enhanced HD audio quality while significantly extending battery life. The WM8996 also includes a digital audio interface that uses a Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) protocol to connect digital speaker amplifiers like the new WM9082, as well as digital microphones like the WM7210 and WM7220. The WM9082 is a high-performance Class D speaker amplifier that provides PDM input capability and is a perfect accessory for the WM8996. This audio output provides market-leading 100dB SNR performance, and the low out-of-band noise spectrum reduces radiated electromagnetic interference; this compact device (2.3mm2) can drive up to 2.5W for a 4Ω speaker. The digital audio interface between the WM8996 audio hub and the WM9082 Class D speaker driver provides superior noise immunity, eliminating the input filter components required by traditional analog amplifiers. This PDM interface format reduces the complexity of the shape of the structure in the end product design without affecting audio quality because it provides the option to digitize the data. This avoids distortion caused by routing analog signals over longer distances. As a result, the PDM interface between devices simplifies design and significantly reduces time to market. The solution also ensures significant PCB area and bill of materials (BOM) cost savings by reducing the variety of discrete components typically required to support an audio subsystem.
