In recent news, reports of devastating wildfires have been making headlines. Last December, California’s mountain fires spread across 103,600 hectares, costing over $97 million in firefighting efforts. In response to these growing threats, Drone America, a leading unmanned systems manufacturer, is working on developing its own aerial tanker.
Partnering with Thrush Aircraft, a company known for producing various firefighting aircraft, the two firms are collaborating on an innovative unmanned aerial system. The goal is to create a drone capable of monitoring fire spread and delivering critical fire suppression materials. This new technology could soon be available to firefighters and emergency personnel, marking a significant step forward in wildfire management.
The upcoming unmanned refueling aircraft will combine Thrush Aircraft’s large airframe expertise with Drone America’s "Ariel" amphibious platform. It will be able to transport approximately 800 gallons of water or flame retardant, significantly enhancing firefighting capabilities. Additionally, the drone will conduct long-range tactical reconnaissance, providing real-time data on fire behavior such as speed, intensity, and direction.
Mike Richards, CEO of Drone America, stated, “The damage caused by recent wildfires has been catastrophic. Our focus is on creating reliable and safe autonomous systems that can help protect communities and the environment.†He added, “This collaboration is a key step in our mission to tackle one of the most challenging threats we face: mountain fires.â€
Currently, only manned aircraft are used for aerial firefighting, but they are limited in nighttime operations. However, during cooler night hours, aerial tankers can support ground crews without risking pilot safety. Unmanned drones, on the other hand, can fly higher and are equipped with infrared cameras, sensors, and communication systems, making them ideal for mapping fire behavior.
Beyond firefighting, these drones can also assist in disaster relief by integrating into national airspace systems and improving communication between incompatible networks. Thrush Aircraft’s president, Payne Hughes, emphasized the importance of this partnership, saying, “Working with Drone America allows us to apply our design and manufacturing strengths to a new generation of drones that can perform tasks no manned aircraft can.â€
Looking ahead, the companies plan to expand their collaboration into broader applications, including humanitarian aid, cargo transport, and maritime patrols. Thrush Aircraft, based in Georgia, has been a leader in aerospace solutions for agriculture, forestry, and firefighting worldwide. With over 2,100 aircraft operating in 80 countries, the company is known for its durability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
Drone America specializes in designing and manufacturing flexible drones that can collect and deliver multiple data sets. Their systems support simultaneous use of professional-grade sensors and payloads, allowing operators to streamline operations and improve data acquisition. With nationwide coverage for both line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights, Drone America is at the forefront of drone technology.
