One day, while browsing various websites, I came across this message:
**"Great difference in new prices! 99 yuan (399-300) Napa Cloud Exchange Box L1 Personal Cloud Storage Mobile Hard Disk (Wired Version – 99 yuan; Wireless Version – 199 yuan). Lynx cheap at 399 yuan."**
I clicked on it and checked out the features. The description said: **"Inline Thunder, remote download, remote access, intelligent finishing, real-time backup."**
That caught my attention, especially the **remote download** feature. I used to run a NAS virtual machine on an N3150 + 4GB RAM system running Windows 2016 with TeamViewer. I even tried a black box (like a media server), but the performance wasn’t great. The functions didn’t meet my expectations, and the VM kept crashing. Finally, I switched to a physical machine (D525). I decided to give this "Cloud Exchange Box L1" a try. After all, 99 yuan isn't that much, and there's a 7-day return policy. (Don’t hate me!)
So I placed the order.
After a long wait... It took about 3 days. Delivery always feels too slow.
Finally, I received the **Napa Cloud Exchange Box L1 (wired version)**.
The first thing I did was open the box. The packaging was pretty standard, nothing special. On the back, there were some product features and specifications. Inside, there were four items: the device itself, a 5V/2500mAh DC power adapter, a short cable (about 30cm), and a quick-start guide. But honestly, the guide wasn’t very detailed—just a QR code linking to the app.
There was a DC power port, a 100M network port, and two USB 2.0 ports.
Next, I powered it up. I connected my 64GB CZ80 SSD (recommended 2.5-inch mobile hard drive). Then I registered an account through the app and entered the key. It took about 2.3 minutes to upgrade the system.
The main interface was simple and clean. I liked it. I didn’t need to go into too much detail about other functions, as most of them were covered in the manual.
Now, onto the testing phase.
First, I tested the **remote download** feature, which I was most excited about.
The app supports Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS, but the **Windows client doesn’t support remote downloads directly**. It only allows file upload, download, and management—essentially acting like a basic web client. To add remote download tasks, I had to use the **Thunder Download Treasure** or log in via the official website of the Cloud Exchange Box. However, the official site only lets you add tasks, not stop or delete them.
On Android, I could manage remote download tasks, but I couldn’t see the remaining time—only the task name, file size, and download speed were visible.
I noticed that the download speed was limited to around **1MB/s**, which is much slower than what I get on PC (around 6MB/s). I’m not sure if being a Thunder member would help, but I haven’t tested that yet. Also, I’ve heard that using Docker or Merlin with Thunder can cause instability, leading to devices going offline. This one might be similar, but I’ll keep an eye on it.
I gave it a **7/10** for remote download. It’s functional, just a bit slow. Maybe firmware updates will improve things.
Then I tested the **transfer speed**. The device supports SMB sharing, which is convenient for managing files within the same LAN.
I tested the **download speed via SMB** and the **client**. The client performed better, reaching full bandwidth, while SMB was also good. Even without a client, connecting to the box to watch movies should work fine, like on smart TVs. I didn’t test the TV app yet, but it looks promising.
For **mobile transfer**, I used ES File Explorer Pro and the app. The app lagged a bit, but when streaming videos, it started playing within 3–5 seconds. The buffer was smooth, and the speed showed up to **27MB/s**, which seems a bit high for my connection. I found that using Kodi was faster, and I could open third-party players, so subtitles weren’t an issue. I haven’t tested 4K content yet, but I think it should handle Blu-ray just fine.
For **upload speed**, I tested via SMB and the client. SMB had some issues with large files, sometimes timing out or showing connection errors. The client was more stable, though the speeds were still lower than expected for a 100Mbps connection. I suspect the hardware limitations are the main issue here, not the storage device or USB 2.0.
For **external network transfer**, I tested it under my 100Mbps upload (around 250KB/s). Using 4G, the download speed was around 50–100KB/s. Not ideal, but sufficient for small files like photos.
Overall, I’d give the **transfer performance an 8/10**. It’s more than enough for an average family, and at 99 yuan, it’s a great value. That’s why I decided to buy it.
**Pros:** Affordable, practical, feature-rich, easy to set up, and user-friendly.
**Cons:** Low-end specs (Ethernet and USB 2.0), hoping for a future upgrade to Gigabit and USB 3.0.
As a 100-yuan product, this experience has been really good. Some may say there are many similar products from Thunder, like the "Download Treasure," but do you grab it? Hahahaha!
A friend recently got a game player cloud, and I got to play it for a while. If I get a chance, I'll compare it. Today, I'm here. Next time, I'll write about the 99-yuan version. Make sure to remember this post.
**On the third day... I decided to return it.**
Hahahaha... sorry, I finally chose to return it. The main reason was the **Thunder remote download**. It worked fine on the first day, but after that, it kept going offline. For normal resources, it was barely working. I reacquired a Thunder Download Treasure, and I’ll do a comparison soon. If it’s the same, I’ll give up on this device and go back to my old setup. Friends, see you in a few days!
