Bose launches AR audio platform at South Southwest (SXSW), which will allow users to hear sound with glasses
The world's first audio-based augmented reality (AR) platform is set to revolutionize how we experience sound through wearable technology. Instead of relying on visual overlays, Bose’s new AR platform allows users to hear sounds through their glasses, making the experience more natural and immersive.
At the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference, Bose unveiled its groundbreaking Augmented Reality audio platform, marking a significant shift in how we interact with digital information. Unlike traditional AR systems that add visual elements to the real world, Bose AR focuses on delivering sound based on where the user is looking, without altering their visual perception. This means users can still see the world as it is, while receiving additional auditory cues and information.
According to Bose, the goal is to make everyday experiences better—more meaningful, productive, and enjoyable. John Gordon, Vice President of Consumer Electronics at Bose, said, “Bose AR represents a new kind of augmented reality that works for everyone. It places audio around you, not digital images, so you can focus on the magical world around you, not a small screen.â€
Bose AR also introduces a compact audio device designed specifically for the platform, optimized for future mobile use. With impressive power and clarity, it can be seamlessly integrated into headphones, glasses, helmets, and other wearables without compromising existing features. Users can control content using head gestures, voice commands, or a tap on the device—eliminating the need to touch a screen or type.
In addition to the audio platform, Bose showcased prototype glasses equipped with Bluetooth and microphones, embedding AR speakers in each arm. These glasses look and feel like regular eyewear but offer an audio experience similar to Bose headphones. Potential applications include learning, travel, and even art appreciation, where users can hear background stories about a painting simply by looking at it.
Bose aims to bring this innovative technology to more people, enhancing daily life in meaningful ways. The company is collaborating with developers, manufacturers, and research institutions such as MIT Media Lab and NYU Future Reality Lab to expand the platform’s capabilities. Partnerships with brands like ASICS, Strava, TripAdvisor, TuneIn, and Yelp are helping to create new and exciting AR experiences.
Developers interested in exploring the Bose AR platform can visit the official Bose Developer site to learn more and access the Bose AR SDK. With its unique approach to audio-based AR, Bose is paving the way for a more intuitive and immersive digital experience—one that listens, adapts, and enhances the world around us.
