The 6th generation of Fibre Channel technology is the next generation of Fibre Channel technology, and the Fibre Channel Industry Association has developed the 6th generation Fibre Channel standard. It is designed to address performance, reliability, and ultra-large-scale virtualization, SSD storage technology issues, and meet the scalability requirements of the new data center architecture. The solution is expected to be widely used in 2016.

The 6th generation of Fibre Channel technology doubles throughput. 16Gbps Fibre Channel technology delivers 3200MB per second, while the new specification's base channel will deliver 6400MB per second in full-duplex mode. In addition, next-generation technology offers an option to quadruple 32 GFC to 128GFC for a full-duplex rate of 25,600 Mbps while providing seamless connectivity and backward compatibility based on Fibre Channel technology.

New features of the 6th generation Fibre Channel technology include:

· Forward Error Correction (FEC): relying on automatic detection technology to significantly improve link reliability and achieve bit-level unit error recovery.

High energy efficiency: Efficient energy use is achieved by allowing Fibre Channel optical connectors to operate in standby mode (or "nap"), with multiple operations per second.

· Full backwards compatibility: The existing 8GFC and 16GFC networks are fully compatible, ensuring that the previous investment is protected, it can be automatically configured to any two sites at the fastest speed, without any user Intervention.

The relevant manufacturers have already responded. Brocade said it will ship its products in 2016, and Qlogic is committed to shipping 32GFC kits in 2015. As the 100G bps FCoE kits go on the market and the viable standards are in place, vendors may be keen to try and launch related products faster.

The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) is a non-profit international organization that includes manufacturers, system integrators, developers, vendors, industry professionals and end users, with member-led working groups and committees focused on creating And advocated for the Fibre Channel technology roadmap, target applications include data storage, video, network and storage area network (SAN) management.
