Wearable chip startup Ineda said the company raised $17 million in financing, including Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics. Ineda designs low-power chips for smartwatches and other wearable computing devices. The company completed $10 million in Series B financing last December. Investors also include Qualcomm and Samsung. Today, Ineda Systems, a startup that designs low-power chips for wearable devices such as smart watches, announced on Tuesday that it has received a total of $17 million in Series B financing, including semiconductor giants Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics.

Ineda has offices in Hyderabad, India, and Santa Clara, Calif., which employs 180 people who will use the funds to develop ultra-low power chips that can be used for one month without charging. The variety of smart watches released in the past year has been widely criticized for the lack of power: like smartphones, these products often need to be recharged every day. “In today's market, everyone is using smart phone technology to develop smart watches. This can only produce excellent products, but it can't make breakthrough products,” said Ineda chairman Sanjay Jha.

Sanjay Jia has served as CEO of Motorola Mobility and Qualcomm COO. He was appointed CEO of chip foundry GlobalFoundries in January and is widely respected in the chip industry.

Ineda is providing customers with samples of wearable processor units and plans to ship in bulk in the second half of this year.

Qualcomm is the leader in today's mobile chip industry, which has been developing its own wearable device components and even launched its own Toq smart watch. Qualcomm is also supporting Google's recently announced AndroidWear smartwatch platform, but the chip used is the Opteron processor originally designed for smartphones.

A Qualcomm spokesperson said: "Our investment in Ineda has once again proved that we will cooperate and expand in the wearable ecosystem."
