Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley are testing a project called "Lightcense," which they developed a drone license to better monitor drone controllers. The researchers used a bright, colored led lamp to form a rectangular array and then bound the light to the bottom of the drone. LED lights will flash in a unique way, law enforcement officers can search the drone database according to different flashing methods, and then find the corresponding owner information.

LED licenses can be decoded by a mobile phone application, or by a camera that law enforcement personnel will be equipped with, or by the naked eye.

The researchers first used the 3D Robotics drones, which installed high-brightness electronic LEDs on the bottom (see photo). During the daytime test, the naked eye recognition distance of the license plate can reach 100 meters. If a normal zoom lens is mounted on the smartphone, the recognition distance can be extended to 150 meters.

In addition, the researchers are developing a special camera for law enforcement police to read license information. Not only that, they have also basically completed the license design, using a smart phone-sized hard case to load LED light set licenses, standard aircraft positioning beacons, and batteries. It is expected that this device will become the standard component of all drones in the future, and it will continue to operate even if the drone crashes under the protection of a solid outer casing.
